Keeping the Weight Off After Bariatric Surgery
After any type of bariatric surgery, it is necessary to follow your doctor’s dietary guidelines in order to achieve the greatest amount of weight loss and to avoid common problems due to overeating and consuming foods high in calories. You are not capable of eating the same foods or the same quantities after surgery. You must consult with your doctor to learn what you can handle after surgery: dietary plans, nutritional supplements, and exercise. Remember, bariatric surgery requires a life-long commitment of lifestyle changes.
Typical guidelines after surgery
After surgery for the first two weeks, you will be on a liquid diet and then gradually move on to solid foods in small portions. The stomach can only handle small quantities of foods because of the reduction in size. Chewing and swallowing is also as important as much as the amount you intake. Careful and slow chewing until the food is completely masticated (softened) will help it to digest slower. Eating and drinking at the same time can cause dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome causes the contents of the stomach to empty into the small intestine too quickly, often causing intestinal cramping and nausea, so it’s best to drink before or after a meal.
The way you eat, how much, and when greatly effects the outcome of bariatric surgery. You must eat about five small meals a day in order to get enough nutrients and satiate any hunger pangs in between meals. After eating, it is recommended that you remain upright (refrain from napping) until your meal has passed through your stomach because of the risk of reflux. Be aware that your stomach now holds food longer and can accumulate mucus.
Dieting with exercise after surgery
Advise your doctor first before attempting any physical activity. When the proper amount of time has passed to heal, the doctor will let you know what you are capable of doing. Exercising regularly will help the weight loss process go along smoother.
You may also need to see a dietician. A dietician will help monitor the foods you should eat and advise you on the dietary supplements you must take. You must also stay away from foods rich in calories and sugar, especially liquids like soda and fruit juices.
